Gold Award < Back Private, USA September 21, 2024 Gold Award CATEGORY: Artist's Choice PATHWAY: Accelerated TYPE OF EGGS: Ostrich, multiple “Spring is Here” is an original design loosely based on the fairytale “Goldilocks and the Three Bears” and my farm in the Spring. The lighted egg opens in two places. When the roof is lifted via the weathervane the upper bedroom floor is revealed. When the midsection is opened by pulling the chimney backwards the entire upper portion lifts up to reveal the lower kitchen level. Literally everything was made by hand except the following items: doorknob, bell, hinges, small basket, “trout” weathervane(repainted) and butterflies(repainted). This egg took almost a year to make since all the components were handmade from scratch. Previous Next
- Master Artisan Pathway "MAP" Categories and Guidelines | Egg Art International (EAI)
16 categories of eggshell art assessment is outlined for the Master Artisan Pathway "MAP". Master Artisan Pathway- "MAP" Kategorie i wytyczne „MAP” MAP Categories and Guidelines GENERAL GUIDELINES Only original designs using real eggshells will be considered for assessment. Any size of eggshell, unless otherwise stated can be used. Designs using more than one egg, for example two eggs forming a heart shape, can be entered for assessment. Judges will score the following categories : Creativity and Originality - Only original designs allowed. Composition and Design - Use of the Principles and Elements of Design (Line, composition, space, movement, balance, emphasis, pattern, unity, color, contrast, rhythm, texture, value, form) Technique Craftsmanship and Presentation Degree of Difficulty Overall Impression CATEGORY GUIDELINES Where one or more techniques are used, please select the category which applies to the main technique. If you are unsure, you can ask for assistance by contacting us. Click on the photos to see a larger picture. ACID ETCHING A design where acid is used to remove areas of the shell to create a design. The overall design and technique execution will be assessed, and the level of difficulty will be taken into account. (Eggs, such as an emu, where different color layers exist will require more careful attention to detail). APPLIED WAX A design where wax is applied as part of the design and left in situ as part of the decorative technique, such as Madeira work, cross-stitch style etc. The even application of the wax to the egg will be considered, along with the complexity of the design. The judges will be looking for a mix of technique to include ‘drop-pull’. Additional cut work will add to the level of complexity. ART BATIK A design which uses the basic techniques of waxing and dyeing, without using traditional Pysanky motifs. This style of work is decorative and is not constrained by tradition. ARTIST’S CHOICE Let your creativity run riot with this category - any style, any combination of technique or use of material. The usual criteria of good workmanship will be assessed. BEADED or JEWELED A design where the main focus of the work involves the application of beading or jewels. Attention should be paid to the careful placement of beads, smoothness of the finish and uniformity of any pattern, such as a basket-weave. Other techniques can be incorporated. CARVED The shell should be carved into to create relief work, using a technique which involves deeper scoring of the shell than the scratch carving category. Attention should be paid to creating clean, smooth cuts. The carving should be well-balanced, and other techniques can be incorporated into the design. DÉCOUPAGE Attention will be paid to the accuracy of cutting the paper print (decals are not permitted) and the surface finish of the egg after the print has been buried. The surface should be perfectly smooth, free from blemish and should not have any unwanted particles embedded in the finish. This category is one where the egg has to be judged ‘in person’. DIORAMA The main focus of the design will be a scene that is created within the egg; however, this can also extend around the egg. The level of detail included will be assessed, however the exterior of the egg will also be looked at in detail. Any items made by the artist should be mentioned as this will be of benefit in the assessment. The usual criteria of a well-balanced and tasteful design will also apply. HAND PAINTED or DRAWN The design must be original and can be in any style; however, the complexity of the work will be given additional credit, and it is expected that the submission will show proportion, balance, and if appropriate, shadow, depth and good use of color to create an overall pleasing piece of work. INTRICATELY CUT Intricate cut work is the main focus of the work involved. The level of difficulty in terms of working with thinner shells will be taken into account, as well as the neatness of the cutting, the removal of membrane and the general balance and design of the work presented. MECHANICAL A design which incorporates movement within the design. The mechanisms used could be battery powered, using pulleys etc., but must operate smoothly. The judges may request a short video of the egg in action to determine the level of movement involved. Unless creating movement in addition to music, musical boxes do not fall into this category. The overall design, innovation and technical expertise will be assessed and taken into account when judging. MINIATURE A category where any style of work is acceptable, however the entire design (including the stand and any added items) should fit within a box 3" x 3" x 3" (7.5 x 7.5 x 7.5cm). Work will be assessed with the usual criteria of execution of techniques used, neatness of workmanship. Complexity of design and skills used will also be taken into consideration. MIXED or OTHER MEDIA Lots of scope for creativity in this category where a distinct additional style of work is added to the egg, such as polymer clay work, popotillo, quilling, scrimshaw and other paper crafting techniques (such as paper constructions/origami). This should not include work that falls readily into other categories such as paper sculpture work. Attention will be paid to the execution of the different techniques displayed with both being of an acceptable standard. Ingenuity will be a factor in the judging as well as the general standards of workmanship. NOVELTY A design which displays an unusual and novel concept. Examples could include a tea service, method of transport (car, boat etc.), wearable egg art. Attention will be paid to the unusual concept displayed in the entry as well as the general execution of workmanship and complexity of technique. PAPER SCULPTURE Paper Toile and Bas Relief fall within this category. Both methods of work include the accurate cutting of paper prints which are then built up into a 3-dimensional finish. The raised paperwork should be firm to the touch. The finished work should exhibit neat cutwork, and the design can be raised against the shell with the edges all touching the egg or, alternatively, certain areas can be raised permanently. Suitability of the paper print and originality of its application to the egg as well as the accurate execution of the technique will be taken into account. PYSANKY-DIASPORA This category allows the artist to combine traditional motifs (we require the artist to provide an explanation/meaning behind the symbols) with a free interpretation to create an original design using the wax and dyeing techniques. SCRATCH CARVING A design where the egg is dyed using either a natural or chemical dye and the surface ONLY of the shell is manually scratched to create shading, texture and a pleasing design. We wish to thank the artists who participated in "Egg of the Month", Master Artisan Pathway and the IEAG Master Program whose egg art is shown. These are all considered fine examples of the styles shown.
- Ingrid Wiese | EAI
< Back Ingrid Wiese EAI Representative for Germany In 1995, in connection with my company, I founded the Thükop e.V. association (cooperation partner for the development of network structures in rural Thuringia). Here we took in people who for some reason needed help. With our projects we gave a task and promoted the self-confidence of the members. Our main project is the “Osterpfad – Vogtland” project. Together with 10 other places from our Vogtland, we designed Easter decorations and exhibitions that began a week before Easter and ended a week after Easter. In 2010, the name "Osterpfad - Vogtland" was decided with all member places from our region "Vogtland" and the cultivation of Easter customs intensified. The organization office of the Easter Path is in Berga/Elster, the main location of the Easter Path - Vogtland. At 6 exhibition locations in our small town you can admire many themes in the Easter garden of our association, in the local museum, in the church, in the park in front of the town hall, the decorated town hall and a large Easter exhibition in the clubhouse. The most beautiful hand-painted natural eggs from all of the locations on the Easter trail, and in particular the Christian Easter story, are presented. A bazaar including Easter café and cultural program with the clubs of our city delight many visitors every year. A total of around 50,000 hand-painted natural and artificial eggs can be admired in our city. For 2 years we have been offering small courses with music and café in our show workshop for children, adults and disabled people. We have a small music group in the club. The member locations of the Osterpfad – Vogtland meet twice a year to clarify the content of their exhibitions and organizational issues. The special features of the member locations are integrated into the respective locations. Our program is shown on our website www.osterpfad-vogtland.de , as well as a video showing all the Easter Path locations. We will soon start an advertising campaign with our book "Easter Path - Vogtland - Spring Awakening in the Beautiful Vogtland". We are happy to answer questions and registrations via our mail: info@osterpfad-vogtland.de

Silver Award < Back Yuliya Goiloda February 9, 2025 Silver Award CATEGORY: Pysanky Diaspora PATHWAY: NA TYPE OF EGGS: Goose This is an original pysanka design that I created with inspiration from the Ukrainian song “Ой у Лузі” by Андрій Хливнюк, Kiyany —written in response to the war in Ukraine which sings about red kalyna and that Ukraine will not be defeated and we will lift her up again—triumphantly. This pysanka was written for Ukrainian newcomer to Canada, and gifted during the Christmas season, to give this person a reminder of home (sadly being heavily bombed at the time); while also a wish for Ukraine to be free and peaceful again. This pysanka was created on an emptied goose egg, using the traditional pysanka writing method. Materials used: beeswax, candle heated kistky of various sizes, and various pysanky dyes. I would like to note that a gradient technique was used on the kalyna leaves to bring a little more depth and depict the multicoloured nature of leaves when sun rays pass through the canopy of trees. I feel this also gives the design a unique and interesting look. Please also note that this pysanka was glazed prior to photography and thus has some glare. This diasporan pysanka is a mix between artistic style and traditional pysanka design. There are two bands on this pysanka; one which depicts the 8-pointed stars surrounded by nets, and the second band a rose and half-flower pattern surrounded by a dotted line. These two bands divide 4 panels of red kalyna berries and their leaves on a black background. The traditional 8-pointed stars (seen in an alternating yellow and blue pattern-chosen as the colours of the Ukrainian flag) also referred in traditional pysankarstvo symbolism as the “sun and stars motif”. This is among the more recognizable symbols in pysanky and represents life, fortune and growth. The nets surrounding these stars, represent Christ and the reference of “fishers of the people”. Other recognized symbolism of the net: it is thought to represent a talisman for capturing and repelling evil. Some say that it represents spider webs, which were traditionally thought to be stewards of nature/God who protected the home and trapped evil spirits in their webs/nets. (Source pysanky.info ) The second band, made up of the rose (8 diamond star); represents love and caring. The additional half flowers that border these roses represent the rebirth of nature after winter; another wish for Ukraine to be reborn from winter and war on its soil. The 4 panels depicting kalyna: The kalyna was chosen through inspiration from the aforementioned Ukrainian ballad. Kalyna has always been a symbol in Ukrainian life, poetry, art, literature, embroidery and pysankarstvo. “The kalyna is a national symbol of Ukraine. It's associated with beauty, love, and resilience. Ukrainians believe that planting a kalyna outside their home brings good fortune and health. The red berries of the kalyna are also a symbol of Ukrainian independence and nationhood . Just like Kozaks always seemed to find consolation in their ‘loyal horse’, Ukrainian women always turned to the kalyna tree in times of sorrow, grief or suffering. In Ukrainian songs and poems, kalyna trees were often the meeting place for dates and romantic reunions. Kalyna is also known as a symbol of eternal memory of the deceased. If there was ever a grave by the road or in the field, local girls felt obliged to plant kalyna trees around it. Such kalyna groves were considered sacred. It was forbidden to graze cattle, cut down bushes nearby. The desecration of a kalyna tree would automatically bring shame and disdain upon those who did so. In general, kalyna, planted on a grave was a symbol of love – conjugal, as well as brotherly, sisterly, parental etc. “ - Info source: www.kozatstvo.net.ua All of these symbols were considered in the creation of this pysanka design and used to create a wish, a prayer, and a gift for this Ukrainian who has been displaced from their home because of war. A wish for them, as well as their homeland of Ukraine, to have a long life, to be fortunate, and wealthy. For the nets to protect them from evil. The flowers, a wish for beauty, rebirth and health of a nation. The kalyna, the deepest symbol of them all—for Ukraine to rise again; while also recognizing the immense bloodshed and grief that we as a people and nation have had to weather for so many days, weeks, months, and years. The black background of the kalyna was not only chosen to let the bright red berries shine, but also an homage to the rich black soil of Ukraine. This black soil or “чорнозем”, has also given Ukraine the nickname “bread basket of Europe” for all of the grain and agricultural exports it provides to the world—the same soil which is seeing Ukrainian blood spilled on it each and every day. This pysanka is a wish for a better future for Ukraine, its people, and the world—while also recognizing the immense grief that has been experienced since the war began in February 2022. Colours of dyes and their meaning: Red: Perhaps the first recorded color, red initially symbolized blood. It often appears on pysanky with nocturnal and heavenly symbols. Over time, it acquired a positive connotation and began to represent love and joy, as well as marriage. It is associated with the sun. Yellow: Symbolized the moon and the stars and, in farming, the harvest. Blue: Represented the sky or air, and good health Green: Represented spring, the resurrection of nature, and the riches of vegetation. Orange: We cannot assign meaning to the color orange, as the color wasn’t recognized by premodern Ukrainians. They called it “hot yellow.” Black: Particularly sacred in the color spectrum. It is associated with belonging to the “other world,” but not in the negative sense. White: purity; with black: respect for the souls of the deceased Source: pysanky.info Previous Next

< Back Jovica Mirosavic EAI Representative for Serbia My passion for this beautiful and delicate art began 13 years ago with my first encounter. It was love at first sight when I saw artistically carved eggshells. Besides my love for carving, I also greatly enjoy creating new clichés for my works. I find inspiration mostly in nature and its diverse variations. Additionally, I love to share my knowledge and skills with aspiring artists or those looking to improve in this field. I've managed to devise and realize the production of a special tool, of which I am very proud, greatly facilitating work and which was a dream of mine when I began my artistic career. I enjoy incorporating special lighting into my carved sculptures, which further emphasizes the work and adds a new dimension and effect to my artistic expression. When carving my pieces, my aim is to infuse them with a serene and beautiful energy that, upon completion, transports the viewer into an extraordinary world of harmony, calming and relaxing them, inducing a meditative state of mind. I love challenges, constantly striving for improvement, and reaching towards new creative horizons

Gold Award < Back John Drlik-Mead March 19, 2024 Gold Award CATEGORY: Carved PATHWAY: Accelerated TYPE OF EGGS: Ostrich Authentic Ostrich Egg, with an original abstract spiral cut design, showcasing the intricately carved Giraffe Stippled Lattice design. The egg top and bottom are accented with a circular area that is stippled. A portion of the spiral cutout is stippled and mounted to the egg design bottom, appearing to seemingly float in supporting the egg. The egg is supported by a smokey translucent Flame-Glass cylinder and Mounted to a 4”x4”x2” Black Onyx Marble base. The egg was finished with 3 coats of Shop-Line 2x matte automobile clear coat finish. Due to the dark base & glass cylinder color, a neutral background color was used in the pictures to profile the art piece detail in its entirety. I used the SCM 400XS High Speed carver, with a variety of burrs, (surgical fissure, and other carbide burrs, diamond burrs). Previous Next

< Back Shihori Kato Advisor I am Shihori Kato from Japan. What started my “egg life” was a trip to Hawaii in 1997. I was moved by the many beautiful decorated eggs that were displyed in the shopping mall. After returning to Japan, I began creating eggs through trial and error. In 1999, I participated in the Portland Egg Show for the first time and one of my eggs was chosen as Best of Show. Ⅰ have been to 30 shows and enjoy sharing my ideas and exchanging information with eggers. I started the IEAG Masters Program to improve my skills. It took 5 years to achieve 9 categories and be recognized as a Grandmaster. The 9 categories are: Filigree, Hand-Painted, Bas Relief, Decoupage, Diorama, Pysanky, Carved/Sculpted, Diorama, Beaded/Jeweled, and Scratched. What I learned was that not only did I improve my skills, but I also became interested in various fields as well as gaining more knowledge. I am sure that the Master Artisan Pathway “MAP” will make your egg more valuable! In Japan, there are many traditional craft techniques which ranks among importance in the world. I am learning one of them for decorating eggs. I look forward to showing and sharing with you at an egg show.
