Techniques: - Wax-resist method using traditional and electric kistka application - Light-to-dark dye application This pysanka was inspired by my experience of growing up in Northern Alberta, Canada. Alberta is colloquially called ‘Big Sky Country.’ The sky features heavily in the design: The backgrounds within the ribbon, the backgrounds of

the main scenes on the front and back, and the skyline above the trees. Front: - The stag is a regionally native animal that is commonly encountered. - Wheat represents farming, which is a primary industry in the region. Back: - The Northern Lights are a regionally common phenomenon. Ribbon: - Vertical band division with ribbon composed

of rhombs/squares and triangles. - Snowflakes on dark blue background represent the winter experience, when snow is plentiful and daylight hours are limited. - Aspen and spruce are two of the most abundant tree species in the boreal forest: -- Aspen leaves on light blue background encompass the experience of autumn, when the leaves create

seas of yellow across the region. -- While spruce are evergreen so look much the same year-round, in this instance they represent summer with a deep green colour. - While the Wild Rose is technically a summer flower, here it represents spring by virtue of being floral. The bright green background further exemplifies spring as the colour of

fresh new growth. The Wild Rose is also the provincial flower of Alberta.
